OWNER'S COMMENTS

With a superb specification and presented in first class condition, VMG is an outstanding example of the renowned carbon infusion Catana 42 performance cruising catamaran. She is seaworthy and fast, equally capable on ocean passages or on a sparkling day trip. She has many customised features that will not be found on other C42s. VMG is the perfect balance of sailing performance, looks, comfort and live-ability combined with ease of handling and maintenance.

High performance sails in Hydra Net® provide a powerful yet easily controlled sail plan. The unique hull design by Christophe Barreau and dagger-boards give excellent performance on and off the wind, exceptionally so in very light airs. Twin steering positions with all control-lines led back to the cockpit make her easily and safely handled by one person; she is forgiving even when pushed hard. VMG achieves remarkable speeds in winds under 10kts when other boats turn their engines on, and is equally able to tackle heavy weather.

The unique advantage of Catana catamarans over their rivals is their ability to carry the payload required for comfortable long-term independent cruising without sacrificing sailing performance. Time on board is a pleasure, there is space to relax and live comfortably without compromise. The interior layout works perfectly at sea and at anchor. In any weather the uninterrupted panoramic views are a wonderful bonus which cannot be under-estimated.

VMG is the result of experience gained during many years of living aboard and sailing catamarans. We were fully involved at every stage of the six month construction, visiting the yard at least once a week, customising her at considerable additional expense to improve life on board and ease servicing. Among many of our additional specifications VMG was the first C42 to have an anodised mast and spars rather than a painted rig, eliminating corrosion problems and significantly reducing maintenance. Some of the extras include enhanced storage and lighting, high quality domestic equipment and additional ventilation.

VMG has been our passion for the last five years, we have kept her in impressive condition - admiring comments are made wherever she goes. She has just returned to Europe after a five year, two-handed Atlantic circuit which included the Caribbean, Bahamas, USA, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and the Azores. Currently lying in southern Spain, a 15 minute walk from Gibraltar airport or 80 minute drive from Málaga airport, she waits at the gateway to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. VMG is fully prepared and ready to start her next adventure.

CRUISING WORLD MAGAZINE USA ON THE CATANA 42

The Catana 42 displays the true essence of Catana: all the exclusive, technical innovations of the brand in an outstanding blue water passage maker, with all the modern refinements for comfortable living aboard.
With her ideal beam to length ratio, adjustable daggerboards, tulip-shaped - outward facing bows, aerodynamic coach-roof and torpedo-shaped hulls, the Catana 42 makes waves wherever she goes.
The cutting edge of recreational sailing construction, the infusion process and the use of carbon are now standard on all models. Powerful, hard wearing, yet light, the Catana 42 is a high-performance boat which can reach speeds of 20 knots before the wind and no fewer than 8 knots close-hauled, ensuring its passengers an unbeatable level of safety and comfort.
The Catana 42 continues to garner international acclaim with the catamaran being recognised in the prestigious US Cruising World Boat of the Year awards.
The speedy multihull won the ‘2014 Best Midsize Multihull Under 50 Feet’ category against strong competition.
Awards judge Mark Scrader said the Catana 42's design appealed to those who like to push the limits of multihull sailing while still enjoying excellent on-board comfort. ‘I found the steering, the hardware and the metalwork all to be excellent. The target demographic here is 'real' sailors'. And this boat sails very well’, Mark said. Fellow judge Ed Sherman was particularly impressed by the Catana 42's helm station. ‘It's got a different helm situation than virtually all of the other multihulls that we tested, in that they're located well aft and outboard. I found it to be a comfortable location, Ed said. ’It's allowed them to do some interesting things with the way the canopy over the cockpit area is set up. It's elevated and has an opening with a view forward. Add that to the panoramic view from either wheel, to port or starboard, and you have very good visibility’ he said.
Awards judge Tim Murphy said the Catana 42's construction was also a major factor in the boat's success. ‘Catana has also evolved with their construction techniques and are building boats using the SCRIMP process, ‘said Tim. (SCRIMP - Seemann Composites Resin Infusion Molded Process).
‘They're putting carbon into the structural components of the hull which is also relatively new. And they're using foam-cored furniture. So they're really paying attention to weight throughout this boat’, he said.
‘Long term, I think that the SCRIMP hull construction technique is going to enhance the value of the boat, and that's important’.
