Jet-ski
Jet-skis are relatively small watercraft made out of sythetic material and fiberglass and have no shell plate. The term jet-ski is no official generic term, but a trademark of the manufacturer Kawasaki. The official term in German is 'Jetboot' and in English 'personal water craft' (PWC). There are various types of PWCs on the market, starting with single stand-up boats and ending with bigger water crafts with seats for up to 4 persons. Jet-skis are usually used in water sports on inland and coastal waters as well as by rescue services, such as the German Lifeguard Association (DLRG), because jet-skis reach high speeds and allow reaching the place of accident very quickly. Some water crafts are also used for towing water skis.
Jet-skis are normally outfitted with a combustion engine. Propulsion and steering is usually generated by jet engine. There is a sport boat driving license required for jet-skis of up to 250 hp and 130 km/h.
The use of 'water motorbikes' is generally allowed in Germany within usual limits of boat touring, which means a clear straight direction has to be observed. Use is confined to jet-ski routes. The use of jet boats is not allowed on inland waters due to the protection of fauna and flora as well as people who are swimming or bathing. The only exception in Germany is the Geierswalder Lake in Lausitz.
For the sake of safety, laws of many countries (including Germany) require the so-called dead man's switch ( or "quick stop") device to be installed. It is a device that is connected with the rider’s arm wrist and stops the engine the moment the rider becomes incapacitated.
